Every country has different rules and regulations regarding visa, work and temporary residence requirements for backpacking and working holiday travelers.

It is vitally important that you are aware of what you may and may not do while visiting a foreign country. Ignorance is not an accepted excuse anywhere in the world and not ensuring you are familiar with what is expected of you could result in deportation or even imprisonment as many intrepid backpacker has already discovered.

A few golden rules that must always be followed are:-

  • Do not do drugs. If caught you will go to jail no matter how liberal the country is.
  • Do not carry pornography of any form especially when entering Muslim and Asian countries.
  • Do not work without a work permit. Doing so will result in you being deported or even being sent to prison before being deported.
  • Do not arrive at a port of entry without a valid visa if one is required. Immigration officials are known to adopt a harsh approach to backpackers and will not hesitate to send you back from where came.
  • Always have proof of funds or access to funds with you. Some countries will deny you entry should you not have adequate funds even if you already have an entry visa.
